The next morning, Grandma stayed home and watched Good Morning, America while Uncle Leo drove the four of us to school. After he dropped off Tori at her middle school, he drove to our school and parked. Then he carried Mom’s supplies into the building while she hobbled behind us on her crutches. Later, Uncle Leo picked us up in the afternoon.

“Did you bring your hummingbird attractor hat?” I asked him.

“Of course,” he said, as if he’d never left home without it.

“Could you be my show-and-tell this week, Uncle Leo?”

“I don’t know. What is show-and-tell?”

Mom always said Uncle Leo lived in his own world. I guess they didn’t have show-and-tell on that planet. I explained it all to him. “It’s where you stand in front of the entire class and show or talk about something. So I would say, ‘This is my uncle Leo and he’s an expert on hummingbirds. He’s just returned from Mexico, where he studied the Striped-tailed Hummingbird.’ Then you talk about it.”

Uncle Leo paused, pushing at the bridge of his glasses. “Certainly,” he said. “It’s always my pleasure to talk about hummingbirds.”
